Decoding the Matrix
E-mobility marketing is filled with exaggerated claims. "Up to 50 miles of range!" usually means a 100lb rider going 8mph on a perfectly flat indoor track. Here is how you use math to find the truth.
1. Calculating True Battery Capacity (Watt-Hours)
Don't look at Amp-Hours (Ah) alone. You must multiply Volts (V) x Amp-Hours (Ah) to get Watt-Hours (Wh).
Example: A 48V 15Ah battery is 720Wh.
As a rule of thumb, assume you will use 20Wh per mile for average riding. So, a 720Wh battery will give you roughly 36 miles of realistic range.
2. Hub Motors vs. Mid-Drive
Hub motors (in the wheel) are cheap and great for flat cities. Mid-drive motors (at the pedals) utilize the bike's gears, giving you massive torque for climbing steep hills. If you live in a hilly area, mid-drive is mandatory.
